Natia - Artist with Passion
Natia Schmitt-Mcheidze was born in 1968 in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, the second child of Levan Mcheidze, a professor of sculpture, and Dorothea Mcheidze, an art historian.
Given her family background, it is only natural that Natia came into contact with ‘art’ from an early age. Whether she was modelling or drawing in her father’s studio or visiting her godmother Theona Asitashvili, one of the most famous watercolour painters in the former Soviet Union, she was constantly surrounded by art and artists.
After school, she wanted to study at the Art Academy in Tbilisi, like her older brother Dato. But the family council was against it. Her mother, in particular, believed that two artists in the family were enough. Her daughter should pursue a sensible career. So instead of art, Natia studied education and later worked as a German teacher at the Goethe Institute in Tbilisi.
However, Natia retained her passion for painting. Perhaps it was precisely because of her family’s initial critical comments and reservations that she developed the ambition to further develop her talent and artistic techniques, so that today she is much more than an autodidact. Natia’s paintings clearly show that art is her lifeblood.
Today, she is studying illustration online at WAM Die Medienakademie in her adopted home of Munich.
