Melancholie

In this work, I present an emotional portrait embedded in a detailed, folkloric décor. Despite the bold colour choice, the focus is on the intimate and contemplative mood of the figure. The centre of the composition is dominated by the bright red of the dress – a colour I deliberately use to address the tension between passion and pain. As a cool counterbalance, I have integrated turquoise and blue tones into the furniture and carpet to give the room visual depth and a certain grounding. The background is designed as a dense mosaic of indigo, ochre and gold, giving the scene an opulent, almost exotic atmosphere. By concealing the person’s face, I draw attention entirely to her body language. Her hunched posture is an expression of emotional exhaustion and inner overwhelm. The complex patterns that fill the entire scene serve as a symbol of the entrenched structures of tradition and circumstances in which the individual moves.
